“Pahokee Prepares for War” Exhibit
July 7 - October 30, 2009
Pahokee Prepares for War examines the town at work and play as it faced the realities of World War II, and provides a rare glimpse into the community at a pivotal moment in history. The work of an unknown local photographer who was intimately acquainted with his subject, these detailed images and the associated captions offer a sense of events as they unfurl. We follow the ongoing additions to the honor roll of those who served in the war, the excitement of the Bahamians arriving in their smart zoot suits with hopes of improving their financial well-being, and a cyclist proudly declaring his patriotism with his “victory” bike.

“From Quilts in the Attic to Quilts on the Wall: Exploring Textile Art by African Americans” Exhibition, November– December 2009 (First Floor)
“From Quilts in the Attic to Quilts on the Wall” showcases the works of six artists who explore and depict their African heritage through cloth using a variety of techniques from traditional to non traditional quilting, including the use of indigo in the art of batik. The works in this exhibition pay homage to Harriet Powers, who is considered the great grandmother of art quilting. Powers art quilts date back to 1895, where she exhibited at the 1895 CottonStates and International Exposition in Atlanta.

“Oh Freedom Over Me” Exhibition
January– March 2010 (First Floor)
The “Oh Freedom Over Me” exhibition was created to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the Freedom Summer campaign of 1964. Inspired by the work of the Farm Security Administration photographer Matt Herron sought to create a similar record of the Civil rights Movement. A team of eight photographers were organized (called the Southern Documentary Project) to record the rapid social change that was taking place in and around the movement.
“African American Neighborhoods of Old Delray” Exhibition
January 2009 – (Second Floor)
Redesigned permanent collection will re-open with newly incorporated images and information on the African American community of Delray Beach from its archives.Included in the exhibition will information on the New Town community, local churches, businesses and citizens.

The event will provide breakfast accompanied with an encouraging word by a guest speaker in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.
“Connecting Community and Culture” Lecture Series Feb 4, 11, 18, 25 & March 4, 11, 2010
The SpadyCulturalHeritageMuseum will present a six-part lecture and discussion series called “Connecting Community and Culture.” The lectures will include a presentation by a noted speaker followed by a discussion of the topic. The series is one more way for the SpadyMuseum to spotlight topics pertaining to the rich cultural heritage of African diaspora in South Florida.

“Milestone Memories” Exhibit
March – July 2010
The “Milestone Memories” Exhibit explores the history of Florida’s African American schools. In the early years public education was not a high priority for most Americans until the latter days of the 19th Century, but for emancipated slaves and their children, public education was paramount. Learning was perceived as the first step on a path toward securing property, civil rights, respect, and a better standard of living. Black schools became the anchors for their communities. These schools were a source of pride and centers for positive social interaction. These buildings were sanctuaries where issues of concern could be openly discussed and acted upon. The “Milestone Memories” Exhibit examines the legacy of African American schools.

The SpadyMuseum will host its annual “Spring Gala” fundraiser at the Delray Beach Marriott. The gala will be an awards dinner with presentations given to honor individuals for their outstanding community service.

“Florida’s Got the Blues” focuses on the contributions of Floridians to the tradition of the Blues.Many notable blues artists had roots in Florida, and they are featured in this engaging exhibit that explores topics such as Early Blues, Florida Women and the Blues, Blues Clubs and Jook Joints, Depression Blues and the WPA Recordings, Popular Music and the Blues, and Contemporary Blues.

“Passages to Freedom: Secrets of the Underground Railroad” Exhibition
July- December 2010 (First Floor)
This “Underground Railroad” exhibit travels back to the 1800s to teach about slavery, the escape route called the Underground Railroad, and the challenges faced by those who escaped. This exhibit features slave narratives, a large model of a slave cabin, models of a plantation and safe house, interactive components and clues to the secrets about fleeing to freedom.
Spady Living Heritage Day Festival - August 21, 2010
Making lye soap, cooking collard greens, jelly making and "putting up" seasonal foods will be on display at The Spady Museum's Living Heritage Day. Featured artists will come from near and far to participate in the festivities. The RenaissancePark in Marianna will come to Delray Beach to bringing the ways of the old country alive. Demonstrations will include shining shoes, making grass brooms and cooking fried bread, collard greens and crackling. Exhibitors will also discuss syrup processing, turn-of-the-century hand tools and life on the farm. All interactive exhibits will be held on the grounds of the museum. Food and activities for children will be available. This will be a family fun event with live performances and music. Admission is free.
