ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Memories live in the moments we share.
The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum welcomes community members managing Alzheimer’s and cognitive decline to step inside its historic Williams Cottage and reconnect with memories of childhood, family and culture.
The House That Memory Built: The Memories We Weave is a free, 12-month exhibition-based program that brings participants and their caregivers together through culturally based activities designed to encourage recall, connection and shared experiences. The program weaves together cultural cues, historical stories and modern clinical therapies, with each experience centered in Black culture and the Black experience.
Designed by Deborah Germain, MPH, CDP Principal Weaver/Consultant; Claudia Moore, MPH; and the team at The Mosaic Thread Practice, the program uses everyday activities, such as getting ready for church service, preparing recipes that have been passed down through generations, writing letters to family members and dancing to favorite tunes, to bring the patient’s childhood memories to life.
